Signs and effects of Problematic Gaming

Problematic gaming often starts during the teen years, and is becoming an increasingly prevalent issue. Symptoms of gaming addiction in teenagers can include irritability when not playing, preoccupation with the game and lack of time dedicated to other activities, increased isolation, and changes in mood or behavior. If not addressed, these issues can continue into adulthood.

An escalating issue

When left unchecked, the problem usually escalates with the gamer experiencing physical symptoms such as headaches, backaches, or carpal tunnel syndrome due to extended gaming periods. It’s also common that someone will neglect their personal hygiene, sleeping, or eating habits. In extreme cases, gamers may become aggressive or hostile and even demonstrate violent tendencies.

Knowing When To Seek Treatment

When seeking treatment for problematic gaming, it’s important to address the underlying issues causing the addictive behavior. This can be difficult, but it’s a necessary step toward beginning the recovery process.

With the proper guidance, you or your loved one can learn to manage gaming habits and find healthier ways to cope with stress or emotional difficulty.
